“I’m investigating the subconscious habit of humans to censor ourselves as a means of surviving in society. Similar to many animal species, we conceal vulnerable parts of our nature to protect ourselves from harm. This series stems from the blueprint we construct for how we want others to perceive us.
As an artist and mother living in the business and technology mecca of Silicon Valley, I’ve found myself amplifying select parts of my identity in social settings in an effort to fit into the culture, and dampening parts that seem less valuable to others. This tendency of social censorship feels like allowing a part of myself to slowly atrophy, and led to a desire for physical expression of this feeling through the painting medium.
The compositional aspects of this body of work create a landscape of revealed and concealed shapes. These observations of our internal dialogue about the parts of ourselves we share with others open the door for introspection.”
